Abstract Considerable research effort have been undertaken to study productivity problems in construction projects during the last three decades at the west and eastern Asian countries . At the same time there have been some limited local efforts during the 1970's under the title of the symposium of productivity uprising . Yet , local efforts have not yielded any valuable results concerning construction projects . The economical role of productivity impels this research to focus on an element , which has been missed by previous work . It concerns the influence of subcontracting on construction productivity . An extensive site study is adopted to cover forty construction projects in Tikrit University campus . General contractors from Private and public sectors have executed those projects . Information has been collected with the aid of questionnaires and personal interviews . The research has arrived at some productivity obstacles related to subcontracting . Someobstacles stem from three groups of factors ; market , project , and profit factors . Those factors are caused by five types of effects ; interdependence , differentiation , differing objectives , personality traits and tension . In addition , the research has contributed to set further evidences that construction sector continues to depend thoroughly on subcontracting practice . A managerial strategy is suggested to help increasing productivity in construction projects .
