Abstract

The aim of research is to study the effect of hent treatment by using pulse Nd-
glass laser with pulse duration 300ps, on surface properties of aluminum -
silicon casting type (390). Three laser energies were used to melt and then
harden surfaces. These energies were 1J, 1.2, and 1.5J. The study into roughness of laser treated surface shows that the roughness is increased after the treatment.
The micro hardness measurement of laser surfaces shows an increase in this property compared with surfaces treated with conventional treatment or the untreated surfaces. The maximum micro hardness measured after laser treatment was 285 HV.
X-ray diffraction was used to identify phases appeared after laser treatment. This technique, together with optical examination, indicates that the phases present are more intense after laser treatment than before.
Finally, wear rate tests were made on laser treated saniples. The result shows an improvement in wear resistance as compared with non-treated or conventionally heat-treated specimens
